STEM Dance

Moving Space is part of Dance Manchester’s programme enabling students to explore STEM subjects through the dynamics of dance

Moving Space flyer front

These energetic workshops, introduce contemporary scientific knowledge about star formation and the behaviours of ‘our star’, the Sun, through engaging in creative dance and movement. The workshops are dereived from a recent collaboration between Greater Manchester based choreographer, Bridget Fiske, and astrophysicists, Dr Rowan Smith, Norman Lockyer Fellow at Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics, University of Manchester, and Dr Helen Mason OBE of the University of Cambridge facilitated through a partnership between the Science & Engineering Education Research & Innovation Hub (SEERIH) of The University of Manchester and Dance Manchester.

Primary Workshops:

Scientific knowledge about the process of star formation and our dynamic Sun will be introduced and explored through imagery, patterns in space and movement such as; collapsing, fragmenting, gathering, bouncing, bursting, flaring and rotating. There is a strong focus on learning through creative exploration and play.

Secondary & College Workshops:

Participants will explore the potential to communicate contemporary science relating to star formation and the Sun through original choreographic processes and motifs. Whilst doing this they are learning new and affirming existing knowledge. Through exploration of dynamics, spatial patterns and time, participants will understand more deeply contemporary knowledge of; molecular clouds, filaments, gravitational collapsing, angular momentum and behaviours of the Sun, amongst others.

Performance Projects:

The creation of a bespoke performance by your students, choreographed by Bridget Fiske and focused around these themes of star formation and the Sun can also be arranged.

Bridget Fiske has worked extensively across community and education including; The Lowry Centre for Advanced Training in Dance, The Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts, tutor for Primary Education students and Queensland University of Technology, movement specialist at Indoroopily Montessori Kindergarten and dance artist for STRIDE Greater Manchester young men’s dance project.
