Presented by Dance Manchester & Company Chameleon, STRIDE is our young men’s dance performance project.
The project brought together local young males & introduced them to dance as a high-quality art form, giving the participants the space to explore their own creativity & physicality. For the majority of the boys, it was the first time they have engaged with dance & performance art – with many having danced for the first time at our school outreach stage, just 2 months prior to the performances. Following outreach in over 60 schools & youth venues, it was time for the try-outs. Places were not chosen on ability alone, as dance experience wasn’t necessary – but enthusiasm, a good attitude & commitment was. Next came the weekly sessions followed by the intensive rehearsal week on-site at the University of Salford’s beautiful New Adelphi Building. This is where the dance was created by Company Chameleon & our team of independent artists. All the young men’s hard work finally culminated in an inspiring site-specific performance, transforming the brand-new building into a physical playground.
